This week, Dawn discusses tree huggers and solar arrays, while Dr. Kyle talks about child rearing and the “wrong stuff…”

On “News & Entertainment” with Dawn Whitaker

Environmentalists used to be called “Tree Huggers,” now we call them socially conscious, and suddenly it’s hip to look out for the environment!  Global warming, ozone depletion and carbon footprint are household words that even the younger generation has learned to respect. But what is “green,” really? Bamboo flooring?  Driving a hybrid?  Actually the term “green” has no clear criteria.  It simply indicates a level of consciousness about the way we treat our planet…

With so many choices from green laundry detergent to electric cars, I thought it might be a good idea to identify some of the places we can make the biggest green difference at home.  Proper insulation and weather-stripping, upgrading to energy-star appliances and dual-pane windows with solar shades can reduce your energy consumption by up to %60!  A well-designed solar panel array can produce enough electricity to power your home and sell the surplus back to the power company. You could be getting a check every month instead of a bill!

But what if solar panels and new appliances aren’t in your budget? I’ve got a few simple ways to be more green without any up-front investment:  set your timer to water your lawn no more than twice a week, 10 minutes each time.  It’s actually better for your lawn. It’ll grow deeper roots, which will make it less fragile and require less water.  Use large appliances, like your dishwasher and laundry, at night when electricity is cheaper to produce. Be sure to separate your trash—recycling glass, plastic, aluminum and paper significantly reduces land fill and consumption of our natural resources.

Tech Tip for today:

Bell Laboratories announced the first working solar panel in 1954.  Since then solar arrays have popped up all around the world.  Every satellite is outfitted with a set of panels and within the last 5 years, purses, briefcases and even sweaters have been fitted with flexible solar collectors to charge handheld devices.  It’s official, the sun is a superstar!  …and why not?  She shines abundant free energy over the whole earth.  No favoritism, no politics…

If you’re ready for a full rooftop solar array, check the Show-notes for how to contact a solar power expert in your area.  You’ll also find some of the coolest solar powered gadgets for sale on the web.

Until next time, I’m Dawn Whitaker

On “Prepare Your Mind” with Dr. James Kyle – “The Wrong Stuff”

For most parents, child rearing is an absolute shot in the dark.  Kids don’t come with owner’s manuals and each one is uniquely different from the last.   But now, research has revealed why some kids, no matter how great their parenting is, just don’t turn out the way we hope.  And the answer is found in their DNA.

Evidence not suggests that about 30% of kids have a defect in their genetic code prevents their brains developing enough dopamine receptors.  It seems that a lack of dopamine receptors predisposes kids to an inability to avoid self-destructing behavior.  Apparently, children with this defective gene are unable to learn from their mistakes.  I have met many adult victims of this genetic defect who just don’t seem to learn from their mistakes.  And I think the number is far greater than 30%.

It’s enough to make you wonder.  If people can inherit this genetic defect and never learn from their mistakes, what about nations?  Have we finally learned that crime doesn’t pay?

Why can’t we learn that drinking and driving are a bad idea?   Despite all we know about the dangers of tobacco use, every year many thousands of new smokers take up the habit.

We still drive without seat belts, still play with loaded guns, still consume 5 thousand calories meals, and still refuse to exercise.

As a nation, have we learned that intolerance and hatred based on race, gender or sexual orientation is just plain self destructive?  As we look at our selves, it would appear that we just haven’t learned from the mistakes of our past.  Maybe there’s more to it than simple DNA.  Sometimes we just simply choose to remain ignorant, to stumble in darkness, and follow our tails.  Genetics or choice, the outcome for our nation will always be bleak, until we learn from yesterdays mistakes.
